Dangerous cargo intercepted at Vnukovo airport

According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia, on  July 22, 2024, one of the Yantar radiation monitors installed at Vnukovo Airport detected a passenger whose luggage emitted radiation 11 times higher than the permissible level.

The subsequent secondary inspection with the MKC-A03 Handheld Radiation Monitor revealed that the source of radiation was volcanic sand containing the natural radionuclide thorium-232.
