Dangerous cargo intercepted at Domodedovo airport

According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia, one of the Yantar radiation monitors installed at Domodedovo Airport detected a passenger from India whose luggage emitted radiation 15 times higher than the permissible level.

The subsequent secondary inspection revealed that the source of radiation was a plastic bottle with monazite sand containing the natural radionuclide thorium-232.

In 2024, radioactive volcanic sand was also detected by the radiation monitoring system at Vnukovo airport.

Details are available on Russian FCS website.
